Introduction
Feeding the community cats in your neighborhood is incredibly rewarding, but it can also become a significant financial strain. While premium commercial cat food is convenient, it isn’t always feasible for feeding a large colony every day.
Because cats are strict carnivores, a diet of plain rice or leftover roti will lead to severe malnutrition and blindness. Here are the best budget-friendly, high-protein ways to keep your local street cats healthy.
1. Boiled Eggs (The Ultimate Cheap Protein) Eggs are a fantastic, affordable superfood for cats. Hard-boil them, let them cool, and mash them up completely. They are packed with essential amino acids.
2. Budget Commercial Dry Food Buying dry kibble in bulk (like Me-O, Whiskas, or Drools) is often the most cost-effective base for a street feeding program. Dry food also has the added benefit of not spoiling quickly in the Indian heat, and it is much easier to clean up, which keeps your RWA happy.
3. Chicken Scraps & Broth Visit your local chicken shop and ask to buy the leftover cuts (often sold for very cheap).
- Boil it thoroughly in plain water (no salt, no spices, no onion/garlic).
- Remove ALL cooked bones. Cooked chicken bones splinter easily and can fatally puncture a cat’s intestines.
- Serve the shredded meat with a little of the unseasoned broth to keep the cats hydrated.
4. Low-Mercury Fish (Occasional Treat) Small, cheap local fish can be boiled and mashed. However, fish should not be the primary diet every single day, as an all-fish diet can deplete a cat’s vitamin E levels and cause painful inflammation.
