Introduction When the sun goes down, street cattle—especially those with dark coats—become nearly invisible to speeding drivers. Highway collisions are the leading cause of catastrophic injury for urban cows. One of the cheapest, most effective ways a community can save lives is by organizing a Reflective Collar Drive.
What Are Reflective Collars? These are sturdy nylon or canvas belts fitted with high-intensity radium/reflective tape, similar to what traffic police wear. When headlights hit the collar, it glows brightly from up to 100 meters away, giving drivers ample time to hit the brakes.
How to Organize a Drive
- Source the Collars: Partner with local NGOs or search online for bulk suppliers of “cattle radium collars.” Ensure they have a breakaway mechanism or are smooth enough not to chafe the animal’s neck.
- Form a Team: Never do this alone. You need a team of 3 to 4 calm, confident individuals.
- The Right Time: Daytime is best. Approach cows that are resting or eating calmly.
- Safety First: Offer a treat (like jaggery) to distract the cow. Gently loop the collar around the neck, ensuring you can fit two fingers beneath it so it isn’t too tight. Do not attempt to collar aggressive or panicked animals without professional help.
