Introduction
The transportation of cattle in India is strictly regulated by federal laws. Unfortunately, these laws are frequently violated. It is common to see trucks dangerously overcrowded with cattle, traveling without proper ventilation, food, or water. While witnessing this is upsetting, vigilantism is illegal. To genuinely help these animals, you must follow correct legal procedures.
The Legal Framework Under the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978:
- Space Requirements: A standard truck cannot legally carry more than 6 adult cattle. Overcrowding is a direct violation.
- Fitness to Travel: Sick, injured, pregnant animals, or very young calves cannot be legally transported.
- Documentation: The driver must carry a valid certificate from a qualified veterinarian.
How to Take Action the Right Way
- Do Not Intercept: Never chase or forcefully stop the vehicle yourself.
- Gather Evidence: Note the vehicle’s registration number, location, and safely take a clear photo/video of the overcrowding.
- Call the Authorities: Dial 112 (Police) and state you are witnessing a violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
- Involve recognized NGOs: Contact a local AWBI-recognized animal welfare organization to assist the police.
