If you feed or look after street dogs in Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) runs an Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme that sterilises and vaccinates them. This guide explains how it works, how you can help, what the law does not allow, and who to contact. For more on caring for dogs, visit our dog hub.
How PMC’s ABC programme works
PMC’s ABC programme sterilises and vaccinates dogs and cats. [S1] PMC’s Dog Squad catches street dogs, they are vaccinated against rabies, and they are released back to the place where they were captured within five days. [S1] The right ear of each sterilised dog is notched so it can be recognised. [S1]
PMC states that the programme has reduced the birth rate of stray dogs by 42.87% since 2018. [S1]
How you can help

The Pawsitive Hoomans Take
If you feed a group of street dogs, the most useful thing you can do is make sure every one of them is sterilised and vaccinated. Report unsterilised dogs (no ear notch) through PMC’s complaint channels, keep a note of the date, and check that the dogs come back to the same spot. If your society hasn’t adopted a dog yet, PMC’s own suggestion is a good starting point.
🐾 Looking after a community dog? You can keep its vaccination dates and records in a free Pet Passport.
