Gaushala or panjrapole: what’s the difference?

In Gujarat you will see both words. A panjrapole is traditionally a shelter for old, sick, injured or abandoned animals, often of many species, run as a charitable trust. A gaushala is a shelter for cows and cattle; some are charitable shelters, while others are dairies that also keep cows for life. If your aim is to help animals that would otherwise have no care, a panjrapole or a shelter-style gaushala is the closer fit.

What to check before you donate or visit

  • Is it a shelter or a dairy? Some places called gaushalas mainly care for old, sick, rescued or abandoned cattle. Others are working dairies that sell milk and ghee. Both can treat animals well, but if you are donating to help animals that no one else will care for, ask which one it is.
  • Ask about registration. A registered trust or society can usually show a certificate and give a receipt for donations.
  • Look at the basics. Shade, clean water, enough fodder, clean sheds, and a separate area for sick or injured animals.
  • Ask about vet care. Is there a vet on call or on site? How are sick animals treated?
  • Ask what they need most. Fodder, medicines, shed repairs or volunteers. Giving what is actually needed helps more than a one-off feast.
  • Feed the right way. Ask staff before feeding. Too much grain, jaggery or sweets at once can make cattle seriously ill, and food should never be left in plastic.

If you see animals that look neglected, tell the management first. If nothing changes, you can contact the district animal husbandry office or a local animal welfare organisation.

The Pawsitive Hoomans Take

A good gaushala will be happy to show you around, answer questions about how animals are cared for, and tell you how donations are used. Visit once before you commit to regular support, go at feeding time if you can, and keep your receipts.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a panjrapole in Ahmedabad?

Yes. Panjrapol Sanstha Ahmedabad is in Ambawadi. Check the Google Maps listing for current timings.

What is the difference between a gaushala and a panjrapole?

A panjrapole traditionally shelters old, sick and injured animals of many species. A gaushala is for cows and cattle and may be a charitable shelter or a dairy.

Can I feed cows at a gaushala in Ahmedabad?

Many gaushalas welcome visitors for gau seva. Ask staff what to feed and how much, because too much grain or jaggery at once can make cattle ill.

How do I know a gaushala is genuine before donating?

Ask whether it is a registered trust, ask for a receipt, look at the condition of the animals and sheds, and ask how sick animals are treated.
