How GCC’s sterilisation programme works
- Stray dogs are sterilised, vaccinated against rabies and released to the same area, as per the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. [S2]
- GCC says it uses sixteen specially designed dog vehicles, with 5 dog catchers in each zone. [S2]
- Dogs get a collar with a QR code and a microchip. [S2]
- Visibly pregnant dogs, pups and recently whelped dogs are not caught. [S2]
GCC says it has been sterilising community dogs since 1996. [S3] It also runs zone-level mass vaccination against rabies. [S2]
What to tell them when you call
Give the exact location, a landmark, how many dogs, and what the problem is (unsterilised dogs, a dog that looks unwell, or a bite). A photo helps if you’re reporting online or by WhatsApp. If a dog is badly injured, also contact a local vet or rescue group, since the ABC centres are focused on sterilisation and vaccination.
If a street dog bites someone
- Wash the wound immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. [S4]
- Go to a hospital the same day for rabies treatment: a course of rabies vaccine, and immunoglobulin for severe bites. [S4]
- Then report the dog to GCC on 1913 with the exact location. [S1]
Other GCC pet services
GCC also runs pet clinics and issues pet licences. See our guides to free GCC pet clinics in Chennai and getting a pet licence in Chennai.
The Pawsitive Hoomans Take
Save 1913 and the number of the ABC centre in your zone now, before you need them. If you feed street dogs, check whether they have a collar or notch; if not, report them so they can be sterilised and vaccinated.
