If you live in Ghaziabad and have a pet dog, the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam requires you to take a dog licence. The rules below come from the Nagar Nigam’s terms and conditions for dog licences, approved by the council on 21 September 2019. This guide covers who needs a licence, the fee, validity, April renewal, late penalties and the rules for owners. For everyday care tips, visit our dog hub.
Who needs a dog licence
Pet owners must inform the Municipal Corporation of the ownership within 15 days of getting the pet. [S1] Whether you have adopted a puppy or brought an older dog home, keep that 15-day window in mind.
Fee and validity
The fee is Rs 1,000 per year, paid in April. The licence runs from 1 April to 31 March. [S2]
In other words, the licence follows the financial year rather than the date you first registered, so every licence ends on 31 March.
Renewal
Renew between 1 and 30 April every year. Renewal needs a vaccination record from a registered veterinarian and a satisfactory report from the Municipal Commissioner. [S3]
Because renewal needs an up-to-date vaccination record, plan your dog’s vet visit before April. Our free Pet Vaccination Tracker can remind you when shots are due.
Late renewal penalties
Applying after 30 April and before 31 May adds a Rs 500 fine to the Rs 1,000 fee. From 1 June, the penalty is Rs 50 per day. [S4] Mark the April window in your calendar every year to avoid these.
Rules for dog owners
- Do not leave your dog unattended or let it foul public areas. [S5]
- Dog breeding centres are prohibited in residential flats or houses. [S5]
- Report the owner’s death, or the pet’s sale or transfer, in writing within 15 days. [S5]
A leash in shared spaces and a poop bag on every walk go a long way towards keeping both your neighbours and the rules on your side.
How to apply
The Nagar Nigam’s dog licence page does not list the documents needed or an online application method. Rather than guess, call the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam and ask how to apply and what to bring. The general helpline numbers are 1800-1803-012 and 1533. [S6] Keep your dog’s vaccination record ready, since you will need it at renewal. [S3]
