What the rules say

The terms shown on TMC’s portal set out the Thane Municipal Corporation Dog Tax Rules, 2005, made under the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949, in force from 1 April 2007. [S3]

  • Who pays: every person keeping a dog aged three months or more within the city. [S3]
  • Fee (tax): Rs 100 per dog per year, “or such amount as may be fixed by the Corporation from time to time”. [S3] The amount on the portal is the one that applies, so check it there.
  • When: apply before the end of April each year, or within seven days if you get a dog later in the year. [S3] The year runs from 1 April to 31 March. [S3]
  • Tag: TMC issues a tag with a serial number, for a separate fee. The tag must be fastened around the dog’s neck, and a duplicate can be issued if it’s lost. [S3]
  • Vaccination: owners must vaccinate their dog against rabies, gastroenteritis, infectious canine hepatitis, distemper and leptospirosis, and other diseases as notified. [S3]
  • Tell TMC if your licensed dog dies, is lost, is transferred, or gets a disease that can pass to people. [S3]
  • Inspection: you must produce your dog for inspection if asked. A dog causing nuisance can be seized; the owner can reclaim it within three months by paying the tax and expenses and giving an undertaking. [S3]

The Pawsitive Hoomans Take

Thane’s process is online now, which makes it easy. The vaccination list is longer than most cities ask for, so keep your dog’s full vaccination record up to date, not just the rabies shot, and renew before 31 March.

🐾 TMC’s rules list five vaccinations. Our free Vaccination Tracker keeps all of them on schedule, and a Pet Passport keeps the records and your licence together.

Other cities: see our dog registration guide for every city and renewal deadlines by city.
